So when I left home, I took the snakmaster with me. After many years, it started to short out, and finally, I had to throw it away. Sparks were starting to come out from a small casing where the cord entered the hotplate. Normally I would have looked into replacing the cord, but I thought it was too risky. With heavy heart, I bid the snakmaster goodbye. I thought that was it, as they stopped making them in the late 1980s.
Rebecca was sweet enough to then buy me a little toaster, essentially a snakmaster wannabe. But it was just not the same. It didn't adequately seal the sandwich; it cooked very unevenly, burning one part while leaving another raw; it just wasn't up to snuff.
On a whim, I googled snakmaster and came across a craigslist ad for a brand new, unopened snakmaster. I could not resist, and immediately offered double the asking price to get it. Unsurprisingly, I got it. It arrived over the weekend. Here it is in all its glory:

And then something bad happened. Sunday night I turned on the oven to cook dinner, leaving my brand new beloved possession on the stove. The heat from the stove caused one of the burners to heat up and melt the same casing that went bad on my last snakmaster. The picture isn't clear and I was too lazy to take another, but you can see it here:

Suffice to say, I was very upset with myself. It was only partially melted, so I was hopeful the damage was not fatal. Accordingly, we had tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwiches from the snakmaster on Monday night.
With great relief, I noted that the snakmaster worked perfectly. Observe the greatest toasted cheese sandwich known to man, in all its glory:

I think my favorite part of the snakmaster is the melted cheese cut it creates. I'm telling you, this part is remarkably delicious. Mmm-mmm. Here's a closeup:

And yes, I just made a post dedicated to a small grill and toasted cheese sandwiches. We have to enjoy the small pleasures. And since we haven't had a picture of James in a while, here he is also delighting in the cheesy goodness of the snakmaster:

He is my son, after all.

We never had one of these- how interesting! My older brother did have a sandwich griller type thingy, but I never got to use it.
Have you ever used a quesadilla maker? I can't think of a more useless invention, besides a macaroni and cheese frozen dinner...
We just bought one at DI. I swear they always have one. I bought one in college at DI too, but it got left at some apt. I think that is what I am making for the kiddos for dinner tonight!
I cannot say I have used or even heard of a quesadilla maker. I generally make them in a pan.
It is a real shame they quit making them. They are just fantastic, and there's so much good stuff you can make. Grilled cheese is the standard, but toasted pb&j is good, tuna melt, or for desert, peanut butter and chocolate chips. Surprisingly good stuff.
I bet you could do something lovely with pizza sauce and cheese too.
Oh memories! I couldn't believe it when I saw the picture. This was an exact replica of the snakmaster we had when I was young. Who knows where it is now . . . hopefully being enjoyed by someone as much as you are enjoying yours.
I remember trying other concoctions in the snakmaster, but nothing ever came close to the goodness of a plain old toasted cheese sandwich.
Thanks for bringing back the memories!
I hate things that are purposely spelled incorrectly. However, I love grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches, so I think I could make an exception in this case. Also, James looks completely different than he did last time I saw him!!
And by grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches I mean grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Anyway.
I had a snakmaster growing up too!!! They are the best! Anson and I have a newer updated version but it just isn't the same!
