James Madison Arrives!

Without further ado, here are some pictures of the lad. #2 was the only one I could catch his eyes open; #4 is one of his first yawns:

He arrived at 4:04 this afternoon. Rebecca was induced at 10:00 am due to a few issues with hospital scheduling. She had fairly easy labor for an hour, and then our doc broke her water. It got more difficult then. I have gained an incredible depth of appreciation for Rebecca and what she has done. One of the hardest things about this was watching her suffer through the rougher contractions and feeling helpless to ease the pain. All mothers deserve our regard.

At any rate, she got an epidural at about noon. At first it only relieved pain on her left side, so the anesthesiologist adjusted it, and she was comfortable from there. By 3:15 she was dilated to 10 centimeters. After 35 or 40 minutes of rest, pushing began.

James had crowned and was about to come out when either his heart monitor started to disconnect, or he became stressed. The heart rate dropped to the 80s. Our doctor was very concerned, so she required Rebecca to push very hard many times in a row, not in time with contractions. As a result she tore just a bit, but only a centimeter. With only a few minutes of pushing and no need for an episiotomy, we are of the opinion that the Australian epi-no worked very well.

He's a cute kid! The pictures don't do him justice. For the first 1/2 hour of his life, he kept opening his eyes, curiously looking around. As soon as his eyes opened, the light would hurt him and he would start crying...shut his eyes, settle down, and then venture them open again. It was so funny, but you probably had to be here. By an hour he was able to keep his eyes open without crying.

He also seems to be really strong. (Go me!) Shortly after he was cleaned off, they put him on Becca's chest. He pushed himself up off of her with his arms a distance of about 4-5 inches. Neat! He also would squeeze my finger really hard when trying to feed.

We spent almost two hours trying to get him to breastfeed. He latches really well but hasn't figured out how to suck yet.

Rebecca is doing well. A little soreness, but all told she did a great job and is resting comfortably.

I'm so excited for you guys! Congratulations! I'm glad everything went well. Gary--I wasn't sure if the comment you left on my blog was an announcement or a future/hypothetical type statement. And I absolutely love the name. James Madison is my favorite founding father. I have favorite founding fathers because I'm a geek :) Congratulations again, you two!

Thanks everybody. We are happy as can be, although a little tired. Things went about as well as they could have. I'll put up a couple new pictures tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks, Bishop. We will have to bring him by Orem come football season when he's able to travel a little more and introduce him to Uncle Carl and Aunt Sue. :-)
